What does ‘webmasters click here’ mean? (Part one)

Ever wanted to make money from other people’s porn? Here’s how.

Before I took up writing and reviewing gay porn, I experimented with being a webmaster. But before that, when I started investigating gay porn online, I always wondered what ‘webmaster’ meant. Let me take you back:

It’s sometime in the 1990’s and I haven’t got a computer yet. But some friends have and they show me that… wow! You can now see naked men on your home PC. A few years later and I have a machine and I start looking around. I did join a couple of sites and had hassle breaking off my memberships, and that kind of put me off gay porn sites for a while (things are better these days), but then I started to simply view tours and see if I could find anything for free. I mean let’s face it, we all do that don’t we? Search out the free stuff and pause before actually committing to paying to join somewhere.

So, after a while I noticed that many sites had a cryptic message at the bottom of some pages saying something like ‘webmasters click here’ or simply ‘webmasters.’ I was afraid to click this in case I entered some strange place I didn’t want to be, or in case I go told off for clicking the link… I was a bit naïve about it all back then. But then, as time moved on, I decided that I would set up a site of my own… not a porn site you understand but a place where I could try and publicise a couple of novels I’d written. This process taught me how to set out a (very basic) web page, it put me in touch with scary things like servers, domain names and FTP protocols, and after a while I worked out that once you know a few basic things about being a ‘webmaster’ it’s actually fairly simple.

The biggest tip I can give here is to get someone to do it if you don't know how to do it yourself. I started learning a computer language and the realised that my programme already knew it. I started worrying about page design until I realised that I could pay someone who was an expert, and the end result was much better… and so on.

Ok, so I now had a basic understanding of how to set up and upload a website. I was using Dreamweaver and still do from time to time (though Wordpress and other software works well too, in different ways), and I had a place where people could come and read about my books. But there is much more to having your own site than these first few steps as you'll see shortly. What was the next step?

Well, for me it happened in a moment of daring-do. I had been seeing ‘webmasters click here’ for ages by now and then I noticed something far more intriguing. ‘Webmasters earn money… click here’ and similar temping messages at the bottom of my free porn pages. Well, I thought, I am a webmaster now – I have a site after all – so there’s nothing to stop me ‘clicking here’ and seeing where I go.

And that was the first step to actually making money out of other people’s hard work. It’s actually a very simple process and all you need to do to start earning money from porn sites is to check out some things, have some spare time, be sensible and be prepared to work hard. We’re going to look at exactly how you make money from other people’s porn in part two.
